FAQ for Fly Drives

WHAT, EXACTLY, IS A FLY-DRIVE??
Fly-Drives are self-guided driving tours for the independent traveler. Upon arrival, Fly-Drive passengers pick up their rental car or motorcycle, and with the aid of the Discover America Journal tour documentation, are free to explore America.


WHERE DO I FIND THE FULL DAY-TO-DAY ITINERARY DESCRIPTIONS?
Full day-to-day Itinerary descriptions are available in the Fly-Drive section. Click on the tour name to pull up the description.


WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE TOUR?
Included in the tour are hotel accommodation and taxes and the Discover America Journal tour documentation.


WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE TOUR?
Not included in the tour are meals, parking, tolls, fuel, admissions or car rentals. Hotel amenities, such as pools, fitness rooms or free internet depend on the hotels booked and are not guaranteed.

 

HOW DO I BOOK THE CAR RENTAL?
Because car rental companies offer preferred rates to international tour operators, car rentals are booked through our international partners and not through TravelsinUSA.


WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE DISCOVER AMERICA JOURNAL TOUR DOCUMENTATION?
Included are hotel-to-hotel driving directions in one of six languages, hotel vouchers, maps and attractions information.


WHAT LANGUAGES ARE OFFERED?
English, French, German, Spanish, Dutch and Italian.


HOW IS THE TOUR DOCUMENTATION DELIVERED?
Documentation delivery is EITHER

1) via pdf download 16-21 days prior to the tour start date

OR 2) via Fedex delivery to the first hotel upon arrival.

For scheduling reasons, each client is asked to choose one or the other delivery method for all Fly-Drive bookings.


WHAT FLY-DRIVE TOUR CATEGORIES ARE OFFERED?
Most Fly-Drive tours are offered in two categories:

Standard h (2*-3* hotels)
Select h (most or all hotels upgraded to 3*-4*)


WHY “SELECT” AND NOT “SUPERIOR”?
“Superior” can imply a 3.5*-4* hotel, which may not always be available in certain areas, especially in or near National Parks.
The “Select” category includes upgrades from Standard hotels in most or all locations. Select hotels are “selected” based on a combination of category, location, and (in some cases) the special character of a property (such as a plantation, lodge, or historic property).


ARE FLY-DRIVE TOURS FLEXIBLE?
Absolutely! Passengers have the freedom to modify Fly-Drive itineraries to meet their individual needs and interests.
There are a few guidelines to be observed: Only two changes may be made to a published itinerary
(additional nights are not considered a change).
Hotels must be booked through the TravelsinUSA FIT program without gaps or free stays.
Distances cannot exceed 350 mi / 550 km per day (in the interest of passenger safety).
Flexible programs must be booked no later than 6 weeks prior to the tour start date.]


HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO MAKE CHANGES?
Unfortunately, this can be complicated. As always, rates are subject to availability at the time of booking, and as a general rule, the formula used is:

Flexible Fly-Drive Price = Fly-Drive Price + Additional FIT nights.
However, by changing the itinerary, the dates for the remaining hotels in the itinerary may also change, and therefore other rates may apply (for example, premium or special event rates).
Should a booking be affected by higher hotel rates, TravelsinUSA reserves the right to re-price accordingly, and will advise at the time of confirmation.

 

CAN I REQUEST A QUOTE FOR A FLY-DRIVE ITINERARY?
TravelsinUSA can only quote Fly-Drive itineraries intended for brochure publication.
Unfortunately, due to the number of requests and possible variations in itineraries (and hotel categories), we cannot quote requests for individual Fly-Drive itineraries. Rates are subject to availability at the actual time of booking.

I MADE A FLY-DRIVE BOOKING, BUT THE HOTELS ARE DIFFERENT THAN PUBLISHED. WHY?
TravelsinUSA reserves the right to substitute hotels in a similar or higher category.


WHAT ARE “FLY-DRIVE REVIEW” DATES?
TravelsinUSA Fly-Drives offer daily departures. However, due to premium dates and special events, some departure dates are not available at the published rate. When booked, these dates appear as “FD Review” dates in the itinerary. Our reservations staff will search for suitable alternate hotels in order to confirm at the tour price. If alternates are not available, the departure date will be offered with a
supplement, and you will be asked to accept or not accept the supplement in order to confirm the booking.


WHAT IS THE FAMILY PLAN CHILD AGE FOR FLY-DRIVES?
Unless otherwise noted, the TravelsinUSA family-friendly child age is children 16 years and under travel free when sharing a room with 2 adults.


MY DOCUMENTATION DELIVERY IS TO THE FIRST HOTEL, BUT THE HOTEL TELLS ME THEY DON’T HAVE THE DOCUMENTATION. WHAT DO I DO?
Almost without exception, the documentation is at your hotel, delivered either via Fedex or personally by an TravelsinUSA staff member. A copy of the delivery confirmation has been saved and made available for you online.

Should you need proof of delivery (for example, to show the hotel staff they have indeed received your documentation), please go to: www.MyUsaTour.info and enter your confirmation number in the space provided.
Here you will find a copy of your delivery confirmation, with the name of the person at the hotel who received it. It is our experience that when this information is given to the hotel staff, they ‘magically’ find the tour documentation.
Your documentation delivery confirmation is posted 24-48 hours prior to your tour start date. In the very rare case that your hotel is still unable to locate the tour documentation, please call TravelsinUSA Passenger Assistance at phone number that is shown on tour voucher. Someone is available 24/7 to assist you.
